Awareness raising and education about Africa and global environmental and sustainable development challenges
- Brief description
- This project organises public education and awareness raising through Internet interactive email groups, e-newsletters, e-bulletins, wiki and e-conferences and websites to disseminate and facilitate exchange of information, debates and learning about the Millennium Development Goals ( MDGs-7), the environment, natural resource management and stainable use (e.g. medicinal plants and biodiversity), sustainable development and climate change impact in Africa and globally . The project activities involves discussion, debates and exchange of ideas, experiences, news, case studies, policies and practices in relation to sustainable development in Africa and globally .This is supported by the collation, processing, storage and dissemination of new information to project beneficiaries by the project coordination. Currently about 350 African NGO members of Conserve Africa benefit from this project, and more than 12,000 subscribers participate in the project with 80 % of from Africa.
- Vision, Objectives and Goals
1. Vision: The quality of life of all Africa’s present generations is improved, without compromising that of future generations.
2. Goals: To improve the living conditions of African people by enhancing sustainable development, tackling environmental degradation, and promoting sustainable use and conservation of natural resources.
3. Objectives:
- To promote the preservation, conservation and protection of the environment, and the prudent use of natural resources, e.g. forest, biodiversity and medicinal plants, national parks, wildlife are preserved without further damages or unsustainable exploitation by local people or businesses;
- Reduction of poverty and environmental degradation among socially and economically disadvantaged communities ( e.g. increased number of projects and programmes to improve the lives of African slum dwellers, of the proportion of the population with access to improved sanitation, urban and rural);
- To increase the knowledge base within 30 % of the public and 70 % of local civil society organisations in Africa about environment and sustainable development issues;
- Increase and international community response and support to the environment and poverty linkages in Africa;
- 30% of the public and 80 % of NGOs in Africa have increased understanding about the extent to which our actions can contribute sustainable development locally, nationally and globally;
- Mobilise all players to ensure MDGs-7( environmental sustainability are achieved by 2015 in Africa);
- Develop an inventory of best practices in the field of mainstreaming environment and disseminate them through our network;
- Increasing information, education and awareness raising efforts about the MDGs-7 among African public;
- The principles of sustainable development are integrated by at least 50 % of African countries into country policies and programmes.
- Since the project started in 2000, about 1,500 best practices and case studies have been documented and disseminated on e-groups and e-newsletters. This has contributed to improving knowledge of achievements from other countries and NGOs.
- How does ICT contribute to the organisational objectives
- Using the Internet and the website have contributed to foster discussion on emerging trends in environmental and natural resource management across disciplinary and geographical boundaries; and has provided timely and relevant information on innovative and strategic options to address these issues. The project has contributed to empower African communities through our free electronic newsletters and groups, which bridge the information gap between Africa and developed countries by creating, strengthening, and providing opportunities and tools for exchange of information about experiences, activities, events, and good practice that enhance sustainable development, sustainable use and conservation of natural resources.
- Our campaigning activities have been facilitated by the Internet because we are able to highlight to international audiences about Africa’s sustainable development and natural resources conservation challenges. We communicate easily with our members in Africa with minimal costs.
- Through email we provide advice to our members in Africa about project proposal writing, funding sources, organising local advocacy and campaigning activities. Our members who are based in remote villages in Africa can contact us for support or for information that they need.
- Members can get information about new publications, toolkits and manuals that contribute to improve their capacity in project design and delivery. Internet enables us to network with partners in Africa and in other parts of the world.
- The e-mail groups aims to encourage learning, networking, and dissemination of innovative actions that address local sustainable development actions and best practices. Since the project started in 2000, about 1,500 best practices and case studies have been documented and disseminated on e-groups and e-newsletters. This has contributed to improving knowledge of achievements from other countries and NGOs
- Transferability
- The project can be implemented by any other not-for- profit organisation, which is involved in education and awareness raising about environment and development issues. People committed to the environment and sustainability can implement the project methodologies and activities elsewhere in the world. As learning tools and experiences, the best practices and case studies documented and disseminated to project beneficiaries can be replicated in other developing regions of the world.
