CINeSPACE - Experiencing Urban Film and Cultural Heritage while on the move
- Brief description
CINeSPACE Project (6th Framework Programme - European Commission)enables users to interact with location-based multimedia contents, related to urban, film and Cultural Heritage while touring a city. Audiovisual content is delivered via a Head Mounted Display with a high definition screen. This comprises a camera allowing users to record what they are seeing and to upload onto the system through a WLAN hotspot or 3G connection. CINeSPACE aims providing collaborative experiences for users, enabling them to share personal experiences while on the move.
- Vision, Objectives and Goals
Specific Objectives
- Provide a rich media delivery platform for distributing specific, location-based urban, cultural and film information
- Provide semantic access to content, using extensions and combinations of standard ontologies for multimedia indexed cultural content
- Create an integrated, wireless high definition Head Mounted Display, combined with audio/video streaming hardware and wireless connection
- Create a hybrid outdoor tracking system using a combination of different tracking techniques such as GPS, image processing and inertial sensors, to enhance the precision of pose estimation and allow for augmented reality content
- Explore the application of collaborative mobile information technologies to deliver and create rich media information based on the location of the user within urban spaces
Long Term Objectives and Impact
- Provide the opportunity for users on the move in an urban setting to receive rich media information, specific to their location
- Provide a novel means of capturing and communicating information in a mobile context
- Enhance the tourism experience in the cities where it will be used
- Learn and benefit from accessing the previously uploaded urban, film and cultural experiences of others, such as making location shooting decisions for a new film
- Generate additional revenue for technologically advanced cities, providing new products and services for exisiting cultural contents in a personalised way
- Offer new business models for location-based service providers, due to the convergence of media, broadcast and electronic sectors.
- How does ICT contribute to the organisational objectives
The heart of CINeSPACE is the development of a novel innovate mobile platform for Location-Based rich media audiovisual content. In addition, the system includes the implementation of a Head Mounted Display and facilities the creation of content "on-the-move", as well as exchanging annotated information with other users. The system has the potential to impact on several aspects of society.
- It provides the opportunity for people "on-the–move" in an urban context to receive rich media information specific to their location via a Head Mounted Display.
- It provides a novel means of capturing and communicating information while "on-the–move", which again may have significant impact (virtual presence and ‘mobile blogging’).
- The system will enhance the whole tourism experience.
- There may be significant benefits from watching previous experiences and the final results for those using CINeSPACE to decide shot scenarios for new films, while physically navigating though the structure of the city.
- Transferability
Cinespace is a research Project and the Cinespace consortium is composed by cities (end users) (San Sebastian, Venice, Glasgow) , developpers (research) ( Vicomtech, Fraunhofer IGD, Ligthouse ) and industries (exploitation) (Tracasa, Trivisio)
- Project summary
The system will enable users to access location-based specific information while navigating a city. Audio/video will be delivered through a small low-cost wireless device situated near to the eye and audio phones. It will also comprose a small camera able to record or send what the user is 'seeing' This information will be uploaded to a database through a wlan hotspot or a 3G connection, in order to create a collaborative experience with other end users
